A longtime skipper aboard “The Ship” at Flagler County’s Matanzas High School is now on deck to lead the Pirate Boys’ Basketball Team in the new school year.

Former Matanzas Girls’ Basketball Team Head Coach (2019-21) Eric Guerrero is now taking over the Boys’ Basketball program at MHS. A veteran of the Flagler County coaching ranks since he first graduating from rival Flagler Palm Coast in 2008, Guerrero brings 15 years of coaching experience to the Pirate hardwood.

Guerrero began his coaching career in 2009 as an Assistant Coach under Per Berg, contributing to the development of the Boys' Basketball program. He then spent nearly a decade as an Assistant Coach under legendary Coach Javier Bevacqua. In that tenure, he played a role in helping lead the FPC Girls’ Basketball program to multiple district championships, consistent FHSAA State Playoff appearances and a notable FHSAA Final Four finish.

At Matanzas High School, Coach Guerrero previously served as the Head Coach of the Girls' Basketball program from 2019 through 2021, then transitioning to an assistant coach role under Head Coach Henry Robinson. Robinson's departure to Pine Ridge this year opened the door for Guerrero to step up and take the helm at “The Ship.”

Matanzas Athletic Director Jordan Butler expressed great confidence in Guerrero’s ability to lead the program. "We are confident that Coach Guerrero will continue to cultivate a positive and disciplined culture, grounded in hard work and dedication,” Butler said. “His vision aligns perfectly with our commitment to developing not just great athletes, but well-rounded individuals. We are excited for him to get started and look forward to the future of Pirates Basketball under his leadership."
